It’s happened to all of us. The brilliantly folded paper airplane, the thing of beauty just won’t, just can’t, just refuses to fly more than a few feet. It stops, crashes, rolls left, right, or turns in a death spiral towards the fly zone. Maybe you’re not as good at this paper pilot thing as you think.
Did you rush through the pre-flight check when you were making your paper airplane and who didn’t? Now that the worst is over, we can learn and get into the details of making the best paper airplane design. Let’s Start at the back of the plane flatten the edges or tweak them up? Check. Are the fuselage and fold perfectly aligned? Check. Are winglets vertical? Check. Dihedral? Check. Forward we notice the overall symmetry. Wings are matching? Check. Is wing thickness the same? Check.
Try checking your paper airplane to stabilize. Is it stabilizing? No? Then do recheck the previous checks again and test them on your fly zone.
You can answer any of these questions after every time you correct your paper plane, of course, you’ll fix it. Now, on the second attempt try tossing your paper aeroplane with a softer throw. If it’s not working then it’s Okay – Correct the wings. If it’s going straight but also still going a little overboard. Add some flaps to the wings to avoid unnecessary yawing or lift – just a little bit. Try it again. Oooo, almost smooth and straight, it just turned slightly to the left. Add a bit of starboard rudder, and turn on the elevator pitch. Come on, you’re better than that. Gather at the center of the room.
Maybe you’re as good at this pilot stuff as you think. A few more throws to confirm this aircraft is dialed in before the outdoor test. Will they windbreak through the plane and bring it to the ground? Will it catch the updraft and fly away for good?
With paper airplanes, sometimes when you love them, you can’t break free. You bring it back inside and carefully document what the hell you did. Repeat the process again and again. Because you sure are that good with that paper airplane.
